Culture
Ancestral Anasazi pre-history is divided into six periods. The periods are Capital Lake Basketmaker II (100-500 A.D.), Basketmaker III (500-750 A.D.) , Pueblo I (750-950 A.D.) , Pueblo II (950-1150 A.D.) , Pueblo II (1150-1300 A.D.) and Pueblo II (1300-1600 A.D. The Basketmaker II and III time periods are named for the fine basket making often found in the habitation sites of these people. Like other Archaic cultures in North America, the Basketmaker II economy combined hunting, gathering wild plant food, and some corn. These people typically lived in caves or in shallow pit-houses built in the open. They also made pits in the ground that were used for storing food. They were called storage pits. Storage pits were often lined and capped in order to help in food preservation, to prevent rodent infestation, and to prevent injuries to members of the tribe.
